New Book Offers "Make a Difference Day" Ideas

Have you ever considered taking part in "Make a Difference Day" but weren't quite sure what to do? It's never too late to get involved and you may be surprised how easy it is to make a lasting positive impact in your community.

Author Steve Zikman offers the following suggestions from his new book, Doing Good for Goodness Sake: Heartwarming Stories and Inspiring Ideas to Help You Help Others:
  • Donate food to local shelters. They especially need items like juice, meats, soups, and stews. Take along some freshly baked items. Load up a bag full of nonperishable groceries and donate it to a food drive in your area. If your community doesn't have a food drive, organize one. Contact your local soup kitchens, shelters, and homeless societies and ask what kind of food items they would like.

  • Because the fastest growing groups of homeless people are children and women with children, donate disposable diapers, baby food and formula, clothing, and blankets to homeless shelters.

  • Help your children's class organize a classroom drive or a school wide drive collecting caps, hats, socks, and mittens and other winter items to donate to a homeless shelter. Have teachers collect donations and design flyers, letters to parents, and posters to make announcements for classrooms.

  • Raise funds. Choose a cause close to your heart and create a fund-raiser. Donate the money to the charity or organization of your choice.

  • Obtain an organ donor card at an organ bank. Fill it out, sign it, and have it signed by two witnesses. Remember: From just one person, six life-saving organs and nine vital tissues can be recovered and transplanted.

  • Nursing homes, retirement communities, and adult day care programs need volunteers. Share a special talent, help with arts or other activities, or serve as a friendly visitor for some of the residents who have very few visitors.
